BookRewards Privacy Policy

Effective October 1, 2026

BookRewards (“the app”) lets a parent or other adult (the “Sponsor”) set up reading challenges for a child (the “Reader”), such as finishing a book by a target date in exchange for a reward. This policy explains what information the app collects, how it is used, and the choices you have. Questions can be sent to chrisramos@me.com.

Who the app is for

BookRewards accounts are created and held by adults. Children do not create accounts, sign in, or enter an email address. A child uses the app on the Sponsor’s device, in a view the Sponsor opens for them. We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children.

Information we collect

• Account information. Your email address and password (if you sign up with email), or the identifier, and the name and email Apple provides (if you use Sign in with Apple). Passwords are handled by Firebase Authentication; we never see or store them in readable form. If you ask to reset your password, Firebase sends a reset link to your email address.
• Your own chat questions. Any Book Chat discussion questions you choose to write in the app.
• Reader information. A first name or nickname for each Reader that you type in.
• Challenge and reading data. The book chosen, the reward text you write, the target date, reading check-ins (chapter, page, or minutes), and which checkpoints you have marked as talked through. If you choose the “My own quiz” option, this also includes the multiple-choice questions you write and a Reader’s answers and scores; they are graded on the device and no AI is involved. Book Chat conversations happen out loud between you and your Reader; the app does not record or store what is said.
• Usage counts. To prevent abuse and keep the service affordable, our backend keeps simple counters, tied to your account, of how many times you have used audiobook search each day and month. These counters contain no book or reader content, and they are kept only as long as needed to enforce the limits.

We do not use advertising or analytics tools, we do not track you across other companies’ apps or websites, and we do not collect your location, contacts, photos, or precise device identifiers.

How we use information

• To run your account and show your challenges, progress, and checkpoints.
• To offer Book Chat, in which the app suggests discussion questions from a built-in list and you mark the checkpoint done. No AI is involved.
• To offer a custom quiz, in which you write multiple-choice questions and the app marks the answers.
• To show a notification on your device when a challenge is completed. These notifications are created on your device; we do not send push notifications from a server.

We do not sell your information or share it for advertising.

Service providers

• Google Firebase (Authentication, Cloud Firestore, Cloud Functions) stores your account and challenge data and runs the app’s backend.
• Google Books and public audiobook catalogs (Audible and Audnexus) receive the book search terms you type so the app can show matching books and lengths.
• Apple processes Sign in with Apple if you choose it.

These providers handle data under their own privacy policies.

Artificial intelligence

This version of BookRewards does not use artificial intelligence and does not send any book, reader, or reading information to an AI provider. If we later add an optional feature that does, such as AI-written quizzes, we will update this policy first, explain exactly what would be sent and to whom, and ask an adult for permission in the app before anything is sent.

Reward text and payments

Rewards in BookRewards are free text that you write, such as “movie night.” No money moves through the app, and we do not collect payment information.

Retention and deleting your data

We keep your data until you delete it. You can delete a single challenge from the home screen, or delete a Reader (and all of their challenges and reading history) from that Reader’s page under the Readers tab. To delete your account, tap Delete account at the bottom of the Challenges tab on the home screen. This permanently removes your account and all associated Readers, challenges, checkpoints, chat questions, quizzes, and reading logs. You can also email chrisramos@me.com to request deletion. Backups and logs held by our providers may persist for a short period before they are purged.

Security

Data is transmitted over encrypted connections and access is restricted so that each account can read and change only its own data. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Your choices and rights

You can review, correct, or delete your information in the app or by emailing us. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights, such as access to or a copy of your data. Contact us and we will respond promptly.

Children’s privacy

If you believe a child has provided personal information to us directly, email chrisramos@me.com and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy we will update the date at the top. Material changes will be announced in the app or on this page.
