Boat Horn Signals Decoder
HornToad teaches boaters the horn and whistle signals used on the water. Tap a rhythm to decode a horn you heard, or look up which blasts to sound and hear the timing. It covers both the Inland and International rules.
HornToad is for education only. It is not a navigation aid and does not replace the official Navigation Rules, a boating safety course, or good seamanship.
Questions, bug reports, or a signal you think is wrong? Email chrisramos@me.com.
Why does one horn signal have more than one meaning? The same rhythm can mean different things depending on the situation, and under the Inland and International rules. Use the Rules switch in the app to choose the set that applies where you are boating.
How do I tap a prolonged blast? Hold the button for about 4 seconds. A short blast is a quick tap.
Does the app work without internet? Yes. Everything is built in.
Where do the signals come from? The Inland Navigation Rules (33 CFR Part 83) and the International Regulations (COLREGs). Sources are listed under “About and sources” in the app.
